We sat down with Amy Orchard, Director, Head of HR & Compliance and qualified Solicitor, to talk about flexibility, trust, and why wellbeing isn’t just a buzzword at LPL.
Amy joined LPL around five years ago, bringing 15 years of legal qualification and a clear vision – to build a HR model that puts people first – without compromising performance.
In this Q&A, she shares what wellbeing in the workplace looks like, and what sets LPL apart from traditional conveyancing firms.
Q: Can you tell us about your background and what your role at LPL involves?
I’m a qualified solicitor with around 15 years of experience. I joined LPL around five years ago as the firm was expanding to focus on the HR and compliance side of things. During that time the firm has grown massively, and I think we’ve kept hold of who we are and our values in terms of supporting people.
Q: What kind of HR culture were you looking to build?
I wanted to move away from the long-standing traditional model that a lot of conveyancing practices experience – the idea that long working hours equals commitment, the burnout culture, and hierarchical structures. Instead, I wanted to move to a system where performance and wellbeing go hand in hand.
Q: How does flexibility work at LPL?
Flexibility really is important to us – it’s not just a policy we have in place, it’s something we offer to all employees where possible. Whether that’s hybrid or home working, or flexible start and finish times, we really move away from clock-watching and trust our employees to do the work that needs doing. That helps not only working parents and those with caring responsibilities, but also supports a much more effective work-life balance for everyone.
Q: What can someone joining LPL expect in terms of responsibility and career development?
People are given real responsibility early on, with clear opportunities to stretch themselves, be the best version of themselves, and build a career that they can be really proud of.
Q: LPL has won awards for its workplace culture. What does that recognition reflect?
We’ve won Best Place to Work and we’ve also been recognised for our commitment to health and wellbeing. We don’t treat those as buzzwords – we genuinely care, and I think that’s reflected in our staff retention. We frequently get people referring their friends to come and work for us, and I hope that’s reflected in people’s everyday experience of working here.
Our belief is that when people feel trusted and supported, we get the best from them.
