Packing tips and tricks when moving home

Removal companies will often charge you by volume or number of moving boxes so make the most of every available space.

Bedroom Tips

  1. Wrap hanging clothes in bin bags for easy unpacking.
  2. Try using a broom handle over the top of a large deep box to move clothing. Already hanging it is easy to raise the broom handle and rehang the clothes. Put duct tape over the top of the box to strengthen it.
  3. Remove drawers from furniture and use as packing boxes.
  4. Roll your clothes into drawers to save on space.
  5. Put your jewellery and valuables in a lockbox during the move.
  6. Pack storable clothes into vacuum pack or storage bags for easy moving.
  7. Put a fitted sheet or mattress protector on both sides of your mattress to protect it during the move.
  8. Fill your shoes with small items to maximise space.
  9. If you need to dissemble furniture, put the small fixings in a labelled sandwich bag.
  10. Wine boxes are great for storing and protecting shoes in transit.
  11. Cellophane wrap your drawers if you have filled them with belongings.
  12. Pack jewellery in egg cartons to keep it tangle-free and organized during the move.
  13. Put plastic wrap on toiletries under the lid to keep them from spilling during the move.
  14. Add a cotton ball or pad to you make-up to stop them shattering inside the pots.
  15. Items like pillows, blankets, and your goose down jacket take up tons of space when packing. If you compress items like these, you can pack more lightweight stuff into fewer boxes.

Living Room Tips

  1. Remove scuffs on the floor with a tennis ball.
  2. Pack cushions and throws into vacuum pack sealed storage bags.
  3. Ice cubes can often remove furniture dents in the carpet.
  4. Pipe insulation can be used to protect picture frames by securing around the frame edges.
  5. Use empty toilet rolls to store and label cabling and cords.
  6. Take photos of how your cabling is set up before you leave to make it easier to set up in the new property. E.g., Back of the TV.
  7. Use blankets to protect valuable items.
  8. Wrap a rubber band around your hammer to prevent scuffing.
  9. Light bulbs can be stored in Christmas ornament storage bags.
  10. Use rolling suitcases to pack heavy items like books.
  11. Before wrapping up your mirror, take some painters tape and place a large “X” across the face of the mirror from corner to corner. Placing tape across the front will help keep broken pieces in place if your mirror gets damaged during travel.
